30-Second bound and pore water concentration mapping of cortical bone using 2D UTE with optimized half-pulses.

چکیده
PURPOSE MRI of cortical bone has the potential to offer new information about fracture risk. Current methods are typically performed with 3D acquisitions, which suffer from long scan times and are generally limited to extremities. This work proposes using 2D UTE with half pulses for quantitatively mapping bound and pore water in cortical bone. METHODS Half-pulse 2D UTE methods were implemented on a 3T Philips Achieva scanner using an optimized slice-select gradient waveform, with preparation pulses to selectively image bound or pore water. The 2D methods were quantitatively compared with previously implemented 3D methods in the tibia in five volunteers. RESULTS The mean difference between bound and pore water concentration acquired from 3D and 2D sequences was 0.6 and 0.9 mol 1 H/Lbone (3 and 12%, respectively). While 2D pore water methods tended to slightly overestimate concentrations relative to 3D methods, differences were less than scan-rescan uncertainty and expected differences between healthy and fracture-prone bones. CONCLUSION Quantitative bound and pore water concentration mapping in cortical bone can be accelerated by 2 orders of magnitude using 2D protocols with optimized half-pulse excitation. MRI Measures of Cortical Bone Water Concentration: Dependence on Age and Pore Volume Fraction
Introduction: Age-related increase in cortical bone porosity is a major cause of the impaired strength of osteoporotic cortical bone. The majority of these pores, however, are below the resolution limit achievable in vivo. Water H NMR signal in bone at 3T results from two compartments: long T2 (T2 ≥ 1 ms), corresponding to free water in pores (‘pore water’); and short T2 (T2 ~ 300-400 μs), corr...

PURPOSE To implement and validate a previously proposed ultra-short echo time method for measuring collagen-bound- and pore-water concentrations in bone based on their T2 differences. METHODS Clinically compatible ultra-short echo time image sequences for quantitative T2 -based bound and pore-water imaging in bone were implemented and validated on a 3T human scanner and a 4.7T small bore syst...
متن کاملBone Water Concentration as a New Metric for Cortical Bone Quality
Table 1: Correlations (R) between BWC, areal BMD of hip and spine, volumetric BMD at 38% tibia and age (N=34). Introduction Age-related increase in cortical bone porosity is a major cause of the impaired strength of osteoporotic cortical bone [1,2]. While increased porosity results in decreased areal or volumetric bone mineral density (BMD), the pores are below the resolution limit achievable i...
متن کاملUsing adiabatic inversion pulses for long-T2 suppression in ultrashort echo time (UTE) imaging.
Ultrashort echo time (UTE) imaging is a technique that can visualize tissues with sub-millisecond T(2) values that have little or no signal in conventional MRI techniques. The short-T(2) tissues, which include tendons, menisci, calcifications, and cortical bone, are often obscured by long-T(2) tissues. This paper introduces a new method of long-T(2) component suppression based on adiabatic inve...
متن کاملDesigning long-T2 suppression pulses for ultrashort echo time imaging.
Ultrashort echo time (UTE) imaging has shown promise as a technique for imaging tissues with T2 values of a few milliseconds or less. These tissues, such as tendons, menisci, and cortical bone, are normally invisible in conventional magnetic resonance imaging techniques but have signal in UTE imaging. They are difficult to visualize because they are often obscured by tissues with longer T2 valu...
